Raymond Military
Park Marker to Acknowledge At last the Friends of Raymond (FOR) Interpretive Walking Trail is a reality! Interpretive markers are being researched for placement on the trail; two Union cannon have been emplaced at the old bridge, with three Confederate cannon being emplaced at the corner of Old Port Gibson Road and Port Gibson Street; and the time has arrived for the placement of a marker to identify the Raymond Military Park while giving credit to those who helped make it possible. With that in mind, a marker has been designed, and that design has been approved by the Friends of Raymond Board of Directors and by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Permit Committee for Mississippi Historic Landmarks. Bids for the marker have been accepted, and we are now ready to proceed with getting the granite on the ground.
The gray granite marker will be placed for
maximum visibility, with lettering deeply etched and color-filled with
black. The “Raymond Military Park” side of the marker with the large
letters will face Port Gibson Street for easy reading by drivers-by, and
the reverse side with smaller letters and the names of the honorees will
face the walking trail, so that it can be read by those who use the
trail. The challenge of saving the Raymond battlefield has been partially fulfilled, but we have much more to do, particularly in the area of property acquisition. Therefore, additional FOR Generals are needed. If you know of any person or any business that may be interested, please pass this information on to them. With that in mind, our aim is to place this monument on the battlefield before year’s end with additional FOR Generals’ names being added now, which is, of course, desirable, or at a later date if necessary.
