Historic Rail Fence Reconstructed on Raymond Battlefield
Friends of Raymond, with the help of the Civil War Trust, purchased 67 acres of core battlefield property at Raymond in June 2009. In Spring 2011, an amateur FOR archaeology team, led by Ret. Brig. Gen. Parker Hills,, a resi- dent of Clinton, MS, and Pres- ident of FOR when the land purchase was completed, made plans to slog into the muddy fields during the De- cember 2011 holiday season. Dr. Jason Polk, DDS, of Rich- land, MS, and his brother Alan, a Raymond lawyer, brought their metal detectors while Hills lugged his GPS, wire marking flags, storage bags, and notebook. On occa- sion, Tom Hughes, a Jackson newspaperman, brought his detecting machine and assist- ed in the work. This field work took five years, from 2011 to early 2015. The findings were well worth the effort.
